Its interesting to note that when Northern Irish was introduced how 'Ulster' and indeed 'British' lost ground. However,the poll of men showed strong support for an Ulster/Ullish identity. Though that too was in the 1970s

The Straight Choice

British or Ullish
Interesting to note that in the poll of men when asked whether they seen themselves as British or Ulstermen...72% seen themselves as being Ulstermen. Those who seen themselves as British was 26%. There were 57% of Catholics who opted for Ulster and 15% of Catholics who chose British.

British or Irish.
Was 84% British for Protestants. 16% for Catholics. However,only 13% of Protestants seen themselves as being Irish,while it was 81% of Catholics who were Irish.

Ullish or Irish
85% of Protestant men said they were Ulstermen. While only 9% of Protestant men said they were Irish. But 77% of Catholics said they were Irish. 17% said they were Ulstermen.
